Hepatitis is an inflammatory condition of the liver which is caused by a virus. These include autoimmune hepatitis and hepatitis that occurs as a secondary result of medications, drugs, toxins, and alcohol. Autoimmune hepatitis is a disease that occurs when your body makes antibodies against your liver tissue. Viral infections of the liver that are classified as hepatitis include Hepatitis A, B, C, D and E.
The Honorable Minister of Health in Nigeria Dr. Isaac Adewole, has estimated the total number of Nigerians infected with Hepatitis B to be around 22 million, with roughly 4 million infected with Hepatitis C, the cases of viral hepatitis were common amongst people between the ages of 21 and 40 years. The Minister further lamented the low level of knowledge of viral hepatitis among Nigerians even though it is the leading cause of death, adding that most of those affected by the disease were unaware of their status.
