Our public university need to think out of box to find solution to their funding crisis: Dr Deji Omole

Image
The nation woke up recently to the decision by 38 public universities to jack up their tuition fees. According to the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr. Deji Omole, the hike was necessitated by poor funding from the owners, the federal and state governments. Whatever may be the merit of this decision, we are concerned that it may obstruct the peace of the universities, whose students have already notified the authorities of their intention to oppose the proposal because it would shut out many of them who might not be able to afford the increment. There is no doubt that the nation’s public universities are facing hard financial times. This is a corollary of government’s meagre attention to education, a fact attested to by its poor annual budgetary allocation to the sector. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recommends that developing nations allocate 26 per cent of their annual budgets to education to enable

2019: APC BATTLES TO RESOLVE CRISES IN 12 STATE CHAPTERS

Image
Leaders of the All Progressives Congress are concerned about the crises, which have enmeshed at least 12 state chapters of the party, SUNDAY PUNCH has learnt. It was gathered on Saturday that the fear of the party leaders increased on July 12 when the Supreme Court delivered a judgment, which resolved the factional crisis in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party. It was learnt that at a meeting of its governors and the National Working Committee on Wednesday in Abuja, the APC decided to speed up its reconciliation process. A leader of the party, who confided in our correspondent, noted that less than two years to the 2019 elections, the APC had not resolved crises in about 12 of its state chapters. He listed the states as Gombe, Borno, Bauchi, Ondo, Kogi, Kaduna, Kano, Niger, Plateau, Ogun, Lagos and Enugu. The party chieftain, who craved anonymity, said the APC had not been able to resolve the crisis in its Gombe State chapter since the 2015 governorship election was

A meteor is like a shooting star. It sparkles, it dazzles, it brightens up, but it is also a falling star. They are also like joy, that has a slender body, that breaks so soon - Ayo abara bin tin, as was depicted in Ola Rotimi’s epic play- The gods are not to blame. A meteor rises fast and disappears at the apogee (height) of its glory. Birth Joseph Sanusi Gbadamosi Adegoke Adelabu, born on the 3rd of September 1915,died on the 25th of March, 1958, certainly lived like a meteor and his rise was meteoric. He was Ibadan’s most prominent politician of his time. He was born in Oke- Oluokun, Ibadan, to Sanusi Ashiyanbi Adeyege Adelabu and his mother was Awujola Ajoke, who died in 1920, when Adegoke was still an infant. why Ladies Expose their nakedness on social media: Rasak Ayanlakin Democrat Speaks

According to Sigmund Freud “Everything a woman does; is derived from a man penis envy” (end of quote). Freud was of the opinion that at childhood stage, we gain much pleasure in doing two things – we love to be aggressive – we madly fall in love with sexual pleasure as well. It would reach a stage, a male child would see his father’s existence as a domestic threat, and would wish his father die; believing the sudden death of his father would grant him much freedom, to act like a husband to his mother. This is what Sigmund Freud referred to as Oedipus complex. Oedipus, according to a Greek story, is a young man who killed his father and married his mother. I know of a woman who says she wonders why her male children develop extreme likeness for her – her female children develop supreme love for their father. I explained the psychoanalytic theory of Sigmund Freud to quench her thirst of inquisitive curiosity, and she wowed. Sometimes, we men find ourselves in a room, exchang

Democracy and Godfatherism; My take: by Prince Ologbenla Adedoyin

Image
What is a democracy ?  At the most basic level, it is a type of government or political system ruled by citizens, people who are members of a society. In a democracy, citizens hold some level of power and authority, and they participate actively in the political, or decision-making, process of their government. In general, it is defined as Government of the people,by the people and for the people Democracy could be better as compared to the Military Era before the fourth republic but, it has been characterized with Godfatherism, politicking of core government policies and programmes vis-à-vis interest of the masses. Furthermore, the current democratic system has been threatened with policy somersault, policy reversal, human right abuse, economic bondage and monumental corruption. It is against this backdrop that the research is being carried out with the intent of proffering solutions to the democratic challenges witnessed. Types of Democracy Following are two

President 'disappointed us,' says Abuja Natives

The supremacy of the People's will>> Tawfeeq Adeleke Solace

The Supremacy of the People's Will. Firstly, I will like to congratulate the newest senator in the federation on his emergence as the senator representing Osun west district and to humbly remind him to face the reality and make the district proud, equal opportunity for all, equity and fairness. I really wish you successful stay in office as this will mount to be a feather on the cap of all the district indigenes and residents. Politics; had been defined and explained by different school of thoughts, which I had decided to go by the thought of Paul Valery who said; *it is an act of preventing people from taking part in the affairs which properly concerned them*. The recent senatorial bye-election in the state of Osun is a clear indication and test of popularity of not Mudashir Hussain but Mr Aregbesola. This is the first time am witnessing a bye-election which so much concerned the state Governor and the most interesting aspect is that, the election doesn't concern his dis

The Rule of Law is supreme : Sen. Sola Adeyeye

Despite a political atmosphere that looks so tempestuous, I remain quite optimistic. I strongly believe in the Buhari- Osinbajo government. The noise level from the flurry of endless analysts and commentators create more hoopla than are necessary. It is no big deal when a nominee is denied confirmation by a legislature. So far, no one has said that the Nigerian Senate manufactured the DSS report that caustically scathed Magu. Would American legal luminaries have gone to press decrying the American senate for paying attention to an FBI report on a nominee requiring confirmation? Would an American President dare resubmit such a name to senate without first resolving the damning indictment of his nominee by the FBI? Nigeria does not have a monarchy; we have a presidential democracy. Alas, tension is a constitutive element of a virile democracy. I am a strong (perhaps fanatical) supporter of Buhari-Osinbajo. But they are human; they have not handled some things right. Pun

UNIOSUN: Now that the boy is Dead BY Olayinka Chocomilo

Image
Few days ago, I wrote a piece titled "UNIOSUN: The lost ones and the rest of us". In that piece, I wrote about one of the missing students of OSUN State University, Osogbo campus who became the fifth student that would become victim of kidnapping in 2016/2017 session. Please stop your prayers for his release because he has lost his life to the cold hands of death. Timilehin was killed by evildoers through the help of his neighbor who happens to be his friend. His remains was found lying helplessly in a compound owned by a man popularly known as "Jafariyat" who later confessed that he collaborated efforts with one of his friends who happens to be a neighbour to perform such inhumane act. Based on phone records, they lured him with "Ogun Isoye". The Nigeria Police has arrested four suspects and they are currently under the custody of the Nigeria Police. They have all accepted and confessed that they took part in such act and they have made mentio
